Karen Street

Karen Street is one of the UK’s most well-known accordionists, she is also highly regarded as a saxophonist and as a composer for both instruments.
She studied both the classical and jazz traditions, aiming to challenge people’s preconceptions of the accordion. She performs as a soloist, in a duo with saxophonist Andy Tweed, and with her own jazz quartet and various line ups as well as working as a freelance accordionist.
The music she plays displays her formidable talents as a performer, composer and arranger.
Karen started to play accordion at the age of seven and she soon joined the local accordion band.
She studied music at Bath University and then she continued her accordion studies with Mario Conway at the Welsh College of Music and Drama and became the British Virtuoso Champion in 1981/2 competing in the Coupe Mondiale in Hamburg and Folkstone.
Karen has played with a host of other well know performers, including Ute Lemper, Grace Jones, Martha Wainwright, Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli.
Also with institutions such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, The Nash Ensemble, the RPO, Opera North, the English Touring Opera with Pagliacci, LSO, BBC Philharmonic, Ice Breaker the Matrix Ensemble with Willard White, Royal Opera House, Opera North.
